MILITARY SURVEY OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE 1522
The Military Survey of 1522 was the boldest attempt between Domesday and the
present to assess the wealth and military strength of the nation.
The following are HALE extracts from the county of Gloucestershire.

A glaive was a shafted weapon of the halberd type. A Bill was a shafted weapon with a curved blade. A forest bill has a long spike behind the blade. A Sallet was a helmet with (usually) a hinged visor and a long tail for protecting the back of the neck.
MEN AND ARMOUR FOR GLOUCESTERSHIRE
There were many examples of the names around in 1608 when John Smith of North Nybley produced his magnificant genealogical masterpiece Men and Armour for Gloucestershire. This mighty work lists EVERY adult male in the County (including John Smith himself,) and is the result of a command from King James I. We have extracted the names HALE, HALES, HALL, HALLE. He was : (p) - of the tallest stature fitt to make a pykeman ;
(m) - of a middle stature fitt to make a musketyer ;
(ca) - of a lower stature ffit to serve with a calyver (i.e a light musket) ; (py) - or the meanest stature either fit for a pyoner, or of little other use :
(tr) shewed that at the taking of this viewe, hee was then a trayned soldyer ; (sub) sheweth that the said man was a subsidy man]

WILLIAM HALL senior is listed in ' Men and Armour ' aged about sixty at Alkington. The author of the Berkeley manuscripts is the same John Smith , with a different spelling, who produced the above named Men and Armour for Gloucestershire. )
